Job:
Reliability & Risk Engineer, Office of New Reactors, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
Location:
Rockville, MD
Education:
Undergraduate:
University of Maryland College Park,
Bachelor of Science, Materials Science and Engineering
Graduate: University of Maryland College Park, Master of Science, Materials Science and Engineering
What I do in my job:
I review risk studies that are submitted by companies applying to design and build new nuclear power plants in the United States. We ensure that the designs are safe enough to be licensed and that companies use what they learn in risk studies to make the designs even safer. I also develop training courses so our staff can understand the benefits of using risk information when we regulate the nuclear industry.
Coolest Thing about my Job:
Trying out five different jobs in my first two years at the agency as a participant in the Nuclear Safety Professional Development Program. In different rotations, I supported the U.S. delegation to an international nuclear safety conference in Vienna, worked in our Office of Public Affairs, trained as an inspector at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in New York, and was the NRC headquarters contact for two nuclear power plants in Pennsylvania. I was able to learn a lot about the agency before “settling down” in my current position!
Why I chose Federal Service?
The opportunity to work on public policy and “big picture” issues rather than traditional lab work or design engineering. Our mission to protect people and the environment makes our work meaningful.
Most Important Issue the Nation is Facing: Ensuring that students receive well-rounded education that will allow them to face tomorrow’s challenges creatively. Even though my job is very technical, I use what I learned in 11th-grade International Baccalaureate English and college honors seminars much more frequently than equations from my college solid-state physics or differential equations courses!
